Hypnotherapy is natural
Hypnotherapy at Wellington Hypnosis uses only words - but using the right words can change your everything. We all have a natural ability: a built-in process for learning - you have used it since you first opened your eyes and started hearing words. However, in the course of growing up that learning process absorbed bad things as well as good things, and some of us acquired unhelpful ideas and beliefs that still define what we think about ourselves.
Hypnotherapy uses that natural learning process but in a planned and scientific way. It removes outdated and unhelpful ideas and replaces them with positive thoughts.
Can I be hypnotized?
If you have ever driven home and can't remember the journey, or if you have been so absorbed in a book or a film that you lost track of time, then you have been in hypnosis. All that a hypnotist does is to call up this natural state when required instead of waiting for it happen at random.
How many sessions will I need?
Hypnotherapy has a standard solution for some problems such as smoking or weight loss. Most problems only need one hypnotherapy session. For example, Wellington Hypnosis clients find that Stopping Smoking can take only one session, Weight Loss may need two or three. Most phobias can be cleared in one hour, public speaking for example. Other problems take longer, some shorter. Most people see a dramatic improvement after the first hypnotherapy session. If there is no major improvement after three visits with any kind of therapy then that type of treatment should be reconsidered.
How long does it take?
The standard time at Wellington Hypnotherapy is about an hour. If you need to come back, the usual pattern is to have one session a week later, and then a follow up several weeks after that, but some clients prefer longer between meetings, sometimes several weeks. Each therapy session aims to make one distinct effect. The benefits accumulate so the effect is greater and longer lasting with repeated visits.

What To Expect with Hypnotherapy
A session with Wellington Hypnosis usually takes about an hour. It starts with talking about what it is you want to change. I will check with you and make sure I understand what you want. Then I'll explain what hypnosis is, what it can and can't do, and after discussing various approaches, we'll agree on how to proceed.
Normally I will then begin the induction and guide you to into a gentle hypnotic trance. Everyone can go into trance. You don't need to do anything, you can't do it wrong, it doesn't depend on any special skill you have to have. All you are asked to do is relax and focus on your breathing. I will do everything else.
What happens in a hypnosis session?
People often don't know what to expect the first time. You will be invited to sit in a comfortable chair and after checking that you are ready I will then begin the induction. The induction is a form of words designed to lead you into a relaxing and comfortable state. If you are nervous or want to just try a little bit first, then I will demonstrate your hypnotic abilities by taking you briefly into trance and out again so that you experience it firsthand. That way you get to understand the amazing power of hypnosis.
Although you are deeply relaxed you are actively involved in the process at every stage. In hypnotherapy you are not a passive observer, you are always aware of what is going on and following what I am saying, and actively working with me.
I might ask you at various points to open your eyes, to move a hand or to speak to me. These tasks are all designed to let me know how you are progressing, and to let you know that things are going smoothly. You will not go to sleep. I will make sure that you do not get so relaxed that you go to sleep - I need you to be able to communicate with me all the time.
Once you have reached the level of trance that's where you should be, I will begin the process of helping you to make the changes you want. I will usually start by gently taking you to a place in your mind where you can be safe, warm and content. From there I will possibly take you on a guided journey where you overcome obstacles, meet wise leaders, or interact with people you used to know. The exact content depends on what you are wanting to achieve. I will also usually mix in a lot of suggestions about your own capabilities, assumptions, perceptions and behaviour. I will also usually invite you to some future situation where you will act with complete confidence with your new found abilities.
At the end of the session I will guide you out of hypnosis again.
During hypnosis you will feel amazingly relaxed, that nothing really matters right now, that you could do anything you wanted but you can't be bothered, that you just want to go on lying there and enjoying this wonderful feeling. Most clients just want it to go on and on....
Sometimes you might want to return for another session if it cannot all be done in one visit but usually you will get a major change after the first session.
What do I have to do to prepare?
Nothing. You don't have to do anything special to get ready to be hypnotized. If you are nervous, that's quite normal. But there is no need to be. All I will be doing is asking you to breathe, and everything just happens naturally from then on. It doesn't matter if you are nervous or calm or excited. The only thing that is wrong is holding back on stuff you really want to deal with. Sometimes clients are embarrassed or ashamed and think they are the only person in the world with that problem. Don't worry, whatever your issue is, I have heard it before.
Will I remember everything?
Usually you will remember everything that was said to you and how you reacted. Very occasionally a client will get so relaxed that they will have no recollection at all of what went on. This shows that they went really deep, and is a good thing.
They actually do remember it, but not consciously. What very often happens is the client says afterwards "Look I'm sorry. I must have fallen asleep during the trance, there are parts I just don't remember". But if I say "Do you recall me talking about a rose?" they will say "Oh, yes, actually I do, now you mention it".
This is an indication the client was going up and down to different depths during the trance. They remember the parts where they were lightly hypnotized, but when I touched on things of importance to them they went deeper inside their unconscious mind at that point and cannot recall it consciously. But if I put them into trance again they can give complete details but cannot recall a thing when awake. This is known as State Dependent Memory and is quite normal.
What if I do it wrong?
You cannot do it wrong. There is no right way - everyone responds in their own way. It is my job to guide and reassure you at every stage. We all have the natural ability to enter hypnosis. All is I do is guide you in, like the air traffic controller guiding a plane down on to the runway. It is always you flying the plane, not me. I give you some suggestions about when you might want to turn left or slow down, but you are always in control. That is why it is so effective.
